The Steam Room welcomes Siren author Harris Channing! Remember to leave a comment for a chance to win a free download of Yesterday's Indiscretion.
TSR: How did you come up with the idea for Yesterday’s Indiscretion?
Harris: They say write what you know. When I first contemplated the story, my daughter had just started kindergarten. I spent a lot of time at school volunteering and of course, people watching. I came up with the idea then and when NANO (National Novel Writing Month/November) came around, I started to write!
TSR: How much do you have incommon with your heroine, Lindy Whittaker?
Harris: I have several things in common with Lindy, but the main thing would have to be my insecurities. Lindy, although strong in her own way, faces a lot of things in this story that have the potential to derail her relationship with Mac. She can’t believe someone as together as he is would want anything to do with her. She worries over aging. She frets over what the future holds andabout being judged by those who live in her small town. Yep, I totally get most of those things.
TSR: What are some traits that your hero/heroine must have?
Harris: Both have to have potential for growth. Both have to be believable with flaws and strengths. They have to compliment each other on some level but also be individual enough so that there’s friction between them. My hero has to be human (or in my paranormal WIP has to have human qualities), be a ‘good guy’ or at least the ability to become a good guy. My heroine needs tobe ‘real’ and strong but still have room for vulnerability. Ball-busting heroines work for some writers; I just haven’t been able to write one yet!
TSR: What is your favorite food-related memory?
Harris: OMW, that’s a tough one! I am an avid foodie! But I think a good one wouldhave to be memories of Thanksgiving dinner at my grandparent’s house. The aroma of turkey, the house full of family, my grandfather’s (who I miss everyday) pride when he carved ‘thebird’. Those are great memories and not just because of the food, but because we were all together. Being an army brat, these get-togethers weren’t commonplace for me and so are especially cherished.
TSR: When you’re not writing, what’s your favorite thing to do?
Harris: I love spending time with my kids, reading, watching television and listening to music. I also enjoy going on historical tours. I’ve hit most of the antebellum homes in the area and have even gotten my daughters involved in my love of history. Of course, I tell them we’re ghost hunting!
TSR: What’s next for you?
Harris:That’s a good question. I’m working on a Regency at the moment and I’m a little stuck! But I’ll figure it out! I’m also going over my paranormal, Witchy Woman, for the last time before I submit it! Fingers crossed that it sells, it has great potential for a series.
